The Ashton VSG Cigar

Friday, August 6, 2010 by Carson Pyles

All Ashton Cigars are well-respected by avid cigar smokers. But within this respected name stands one line that is getting even more attention than the rest. The only problem is there aren't a whole lot to go around.

These full-bodied, extremely difficult-to-come-by cigars were blended exclusively for Ashton by Carlos Fuente using small-batch Dominican long-fillers aged for up to five years and a wrapper more exclusive than an invitation to The White House, grown on a private, carefully controlled estate in Ecuador. While firmly entrenched in the hearts of a generation of aficionados, this cigar has never before been offered by Thompson because we simply couldn't get our hands on a large enough supply, until this past April when we unveiled the Ashton VSG to our cigar-greedy (but kind, of course) customers.

The Ashton VSG Virgin Sungrown is available in 2 shapes- Sorcerer (7" x 49) & Illusion (5-1/4" x 52).

Don Rafael- Everyday Cigars

Friday, August 6, 2010 by Carson Pyles
An everyday cigar is one that is modestly priced to allow for frequent enjoyment. But when an everyday cigar comes from Victor Sinclair, it's for certain a quality product. With its blend of Dominican long fillers and binder and Connecticut-seed Ecuadoran grown Natural or Maduro wrappers, Don Rafael is a cigar providing instant delight. Like Macanudo, Don Rafael Natural has a smooth, mellow aroma that lingers softly on the palate. In its Madura incarnation it has a sweet, nut-like flavor.

These Don Rafael Cigars come in 5 different sizes-- all for the same low price! And you also, for most sizes, you have the choice of the Natural or Maduro wrapper.

Review of the Perdomo Artesanal Churchill Maduro

Wednesday, August 4, 2010 by Carson Pyles

This Thompson Exclusive cigar was made possible by the palate and vision of Nicaraguan cigars virtuoso, Nick Perdomo. In the books this one is said to be medium bodied, but to me it seemed more like a mild-medium.

This cigar had an excellent finish. It was a good bit of flavor with less of the bitterness. When you find a Maduro wrapper with very little bitterness, you know that you've found a quality cigar. The Perdomo Artesanal is a cigar that produces a surprisingly small amount of smoke while giving the smoker a fairly sweet, earthy taste. This cigar was tightly packed and since it's a churchill, it'll take you a while. But even considering these things, this cigar took longer than I expected. So if you're going to buy this cigar, than make sure you have at least an hour an a half to enjoy it. Don't ever rush a cigar! It would be a crime to shorten the duration of this good cigar, or even worse, let it get too hot.

This particular line of Perdomo Cigars is only available from Thompson. It's available in 20-packs at ThompsonCigar.com.

Scotch Whiskey flavored pipe tobacco from Davidoff

Wednesday, August 4, 2010 by Carson Pyles

Three qualities that are looked at in every pipe tobacco are the strength of the tobacco, the flavoring of it, and the aroma that comes from it. Scotch Whiskey Davidoff Pipe Tobacco passes all three of these tests with flying colors.

With a mild to medium strength and a full and savory flavor, the Davidoff Scotch Whiskey tobacco will indeed provide a smoke as stimulating as the conversation that so oft accompanies a good pipe smoking. As for the aroma given off by this particular blend, only positive statements can be made. The fragrant clouds of smoke that it produces are unmistakably pleasant to both smokers and non-smokers alike. Another extremely desirable quality to be examined in a pipe tobacco is the way in which it burns. The way in which a pipe tobacco burns makes all the difference in the way it smokes in the pipe. Does it burn too hot? Does it burn out to fast? Does it burn evenly throughout? These are the questions to consider when evaluating a pipe tobacco – and in each case the Mac Baren Scotch Whiskey mix excels far and above the average pipe tobacco. It does not burn too hot, it does not burn out to fast, and typically burns evenly throughout the duration of the smoke.

This tobacco will satiate the smoking desires of both the veteran and novice. When it comes to Davidoff Pipe Tobacco, it is hard to go wrong, but when it comes to the Scotch Whiskey blend, there have been too many smokers that have gone far too long without experiencing this smoke that is truly an adventure into the realm of pipe tobacco.

Romeo Y Julieta Vintage Cigars

Thursday, July 29, 2010 by Carson Pyles

"O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo..?" I know where he is! Romeo Y Julieta has released a product that is turning heads all over the cigar world. The hopelessly romantic couple is at it again with their Romeo Y Julieta Vintage V Connecticut Double Corona.

This is perhaps one of my favorites from Romeo Y Julieta and I have been smoking this brand for a long time. This extremely rare cigar consists of several major elements that make it quite unique and complex. The filler is a fine Dominican Olor, the binder is the best, prime, Mexican tobacco available and finally, the combination is topped off with the rarest of the rare Connecticut-Connecticut wrappers. Aged for at least three years before released into the market - I could go on all day. All of that is well and good - I get it, what's really spectacular about this cigar, you're wondering. Well - It's just awesome; creamy, smooth, delicate, mild-medium bodied... perfect.

Save the best for last - - Romeo and Juliet go the extra mile with their 2 in 1 humidor box, complete with the well-known Credo Humidification System. This way You can keep these cigars in the original box for an extended period of time, which make them perfect for travel, shipping or simply showing off (no shame!).

Table Lighter?!

Monday, July 26, 2010 by Carson Pyles

Yeah that's right, a table cigar lighter. Never heard of it? Well - this is one of the more badass cigar accessories, no doubt about it.

I can honestly say that this is the most unique and intriguing lighter I've ever come across from Vector. It has two completely separate ignition systems, both enacted by their own individual button. On one hand, there’s the traditional “soft” flame that is great for lighting cigars. Also attached for large ring-gauge cigars that need extra attention, there's a single-jet torch flame that is sure to candle your cigar perfectly.

This makes for a great gift. Perfect for that gadget lover in your life.

Love Macanudo cigars? Try these

Sunday, July 25, 2010 by Carson Pyles
In my opinion Don Rafael is a great cigar that can easily be compared to big names like Macanudo cigars.

These cigars are "better than many, cheaper than most."
Don Rafael was conceived by Cigar Master, Jose Dominguez from Victor Sinclair, to compete directly with the iconic Macanudo Cigars brand and, as always, he hit his mark! You can even call Don Rafael "Best in Class" because of it's all-Dominican blend of flavorful tobaccos and stunningly super-low price point. Don Rafael is mild bodied, smooth smoking, and available with either a Natural Connecticut or Indonesion Maduro wrapper.

If you like Macanudo cigars, than try a bundle of these for about a buck and a half per stick and see if they're as good. If you think they are, than you could switch over and save some serious cash.

And the crazy thing is that it's going for an unheard of TWO DOLLARS AND NINETY FIVE CENTS. This accessory used to cost $15.95. Take advantage of this incredible deal if you're in need of a pipe tool like this one. You can't go without a pipe tool like this one if you're a true pipe smoker.

Real difference between hand mades and machine mades

Friday, July 23, 2010 by Carson Pyles

Handmade Cigars are made with three different types of tobacco: filler, binder, and wrapper. Each is hand picked and graded for quality assurance purposes. The filler generally consists of "long filler", which is the most prized. Whereas the binder consist of more irregular yet quality pieces which bind the filler together. Finally, the wrapper consists of the highest quality tobacco that often varies in type such as Connecticut, maduro, natural, etc. Each cigar is handmade and graded by a train professional.

Machine made cigars, on the other hand, are not as complex. The filler consists of scraps rather than "long filler"; however, these scraps are of quality. The binder can either be made of more tobacco leaves or tobacco paper, (basically paper made from the scraps of tobacco leaves). The wrapper of machine made cigars varies with each brand, they are made with quality tobacco leaves or with tobacco paper.
The beauty of machine-made cigars is the price. You don't have to have deep pockets to enjoy these boys. They also are often times fortified by adding flavorings such as vanilla, wine, or even grape. For the beginner and for those who smoke at work, machine made cigars are hidden treasures. For the aspiring aficionado, it might be best to stick with handmade cigars, which have higher quality ingredients and more complex flavors.

"The Rebirth of Cigars"

Friday, July 23, 2010 by Carson Pyles
Looking for a new exciting cigar that's not the same ole, same ole? Look no further - - You have found what you're looking for with Acid Exotic Cigars. These cigars are exotic in almost every way, infused thoroughly with glorious flavors and we're not talking about flavors like rum or vanilla - we're talking about clove infused, really tasty sticks.

There is nothing ordinary about these cigars - Drew Estate makes that pretty clear with their company slogan - "The Rebirth of Cigars... From the traditional to the outrageous and everything inbetween."

The Acid Subculture Kindred Spirit, a Thompson exclusive, is a truly unique and exotic cigar. The filler hails from Habana-seed tobacco from the Jalapa Valley and also contains long filler from the Esteli, Nicaragua. This combination is fortified with a delectable Sumatra Sun-grown Binder. The cigar is completed by a Connecticut Shade Wrapper cultivated in the rich volcanic-soil highlands Ecuador. I know you will thoroughly enjoy this cigar as I have. Don't waste your time looking for the Acid Subculture Kindred Spirit anywhere else. These bad boys are only available at Thompson Cigar.

Review of the Cohiba "Red Dot"

Thursday, July 22, 2010 by Carson Pyles
Cohiba's most popular label, commonly referred to as the "Red Dot," was released in 1997 after five full years of research. The guys at Cohiba took their time to make sure that they produced a winner and boy did they.

This is a medium-full bodied cigar that just might slap a fat smile on your face. It did with me. The finish on each draw is perfectly smooth and flavorful. This cigar dons a Colorado Maduro wrapper that brings it an earthy taste that is not easy to find in a cigar. It's construction appeared to be a little shaky and the ash way uneven for the first 20 minutes or so, but a great draw and wonderful flavor extinguished any of my concerns about this cigar.

If you want a big taste that is one of the most satisfying you can find, look no further than Cohiba Cigars. This is perhaps one of the best showings of the fine tobacco that the Dominican Republic has to offer.
