The rich history and refined nature of
cigars has spawned its own subculture and terminology. Although seasoned aficionados are probably familiar with most of these terms, they might be a source of confusion to new cigar smokers. There are too many terms for just one blog post so I will outline some of the more commonly used, cigar-related words and phrases here:
- Blend: This refers to different types of tobacco used as filler.
- Cigarillo: The term used for small, thin cigars that are often machine-made rather than being rolled by hand.
- Draw: The word aficionados use instead of "inhale" because it more accurately describes the act of sucking air through a cigar to taste the smoke in the mouth as opposed to inhaling it into the lungs.
- Filler: The tobacco inside the cigar.
- Humidor: A device for storing cigars and one of the first things you should get after becoming an aficionado. It is known as a "humidor" because it maintains the humidity and temperature at levels ideal for preserving and aging your treasured cigars.
- Maduro: A very dark, fermented wrapper that can have a lot of flavor. "Maduro" means "ripe" in Spanish.
- Wrapper: The tobacco leaf used to wrap the filler tobacco.
