With a consistently mellow taste, Macanudo is the number one premium cigar in the United States today. Part of the reason for this is that the centuries-old traditional Cuban method of aging its Connecticut shade-grown wrapper not once but twice is still followed by Macanudo. From seed to harvest, Macanudo’s Cigar Master, Daniel Nuñez, is in charge of every Macanudo Connecticut Valley Shade crop. The best carefully hand-selected premium long filler tobaccos from Jamaica and the Dominican Republic make the Macanudo sought after for its mildness and flavor by knowledgeable cigar smokers everywhere. A dark, supple leaf from Mexico makes up the binder in this favorite. Highly prized by cigar smokers is its unvarying mellowness, year after year.

Why Are Macanudo Cigars so Popular?

Tuesday, April 17, 2012 by Pat The Cigar Guy

MACANUDO GOLD LABEL HAMPTON COURT CONNECTICUT CORONAAmong the hundreds of cigar brands that have been tasted by aficionados across the nation, certain names stand out for their high quality smoking experience. Some of these brands are so well known that even non-aficionados have heard of them and recognize names like Cohiba and Davidoff as being synonymous with excellent cigars. One of the other, most well known names when it comes to cigars is Macanudo. These fine, quality smokes have achieved fame for the following reasons:

  • The number one, premium cigar in the United States of America: Macanudos are the top, high quality cigar in the country. There are a variety of premium smokes but this one has become the most popular of the bunch and is thus recognized as one of the best cigar brands around.
  • A double-aged wrapper: As with some high quality Cuban cigar brands, the wrappers of these treasured sticks are carefully aged twice. This helps to add that extra bit of complexity that makes this smoke stand out from the crowd.
  • Mild yet full of flavor: The combination of excellent flavor and a mild smoking experience is probably the biggest factor that has elevated the popularity of this brand.

A.O.A. isn’t meant to compete against the likes of La Gloria Cubana, Macanudo, much less C.A.O. No, it has no pretenses of greatness, but it is a nice smoke. And at a price of one-fourth to one-fifth the cost of the name brands, it’s even more attractive. In light of its modest price, A.O.A. is really a surprisingly good tasting cigar. Perhaps that is in large measure due to Orlando Alvarez’s commitment to his family’s three generations of cigar making.

In his Dominican A.O.A., Alvarez uses a long filler blend of Piloto Cubano and Olor with an Olor binder. These tobaccos are the standard for the Dominican manufacturer and are known for their predictably rich flavors. Then Alvarez splurges just a bit by capping off A.O.A. with a Connecticut- Connecticut wrapper. It’s this wrapper that provides the cigar’s mildness that proves so pleasantly satisfying. Again, however, the real story with A.O.A. is price. It provides genuine value for your money. This is an eminently affordable smoke that you’ll feel comfortable making your everyday cigar. Why, it even comes in five popular sizes. Stock your humidor with A.O.A. and enjoy.

H. Upmann is perhaps the most renowned name in cigars, the standard by which cigars have been measured for decades. When a manufacturer with this reputation to uphold enters a new product into his line, he must be sure, very sure. With so much riding on the reputation of the brand, he cannot afford a mediocre effort. Enter H. Upmann Maduro Plus.

Utilizing Connecticut Broadleaf, the rarest selection of Maduro, hard to find, hard to handle without injuring the leaf, but yielding the sweetest, most delicious Maduro smoke imaginable, H. Upmann maintains its stature and sets the world standard for Maduro. Nothing less than the Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro would suffice for H. Upmann. As any cigar maker would attest, however, as good as the wrapper is, there is more to the success of the cigar. If the result is to meet the expectation, the long filler blend must be a taste match and of equally great quality. Suffice it to say, the H. Upmann Maduro Plus preserves the reputation.

For decades since departing Cuba for the Dominican Republic, Upmann has been the cigar that sets the standard for Dominicans.

Now, taking advantage of the availability of a quantity of some outstandingly aged four year old African Cameroon wrapper, Upmann cigars ascend to the next level. The Cameroon provides the perfect complement to Upmann’s inspired blend of Dominican Piloto and Nicaraguan and Peruvian long fillers. The combination is spectacular.

To preserve and protect the taste of the Cameroon wrapper, Altadis spares no expense as they lovingly wrap each cigar in a cedar sheath. Each Upmann, nestled in a protective sleeve of cedar, continues its slow aging process. As a way of enhancing the process even more, Altadis goes the extra mile of inserting an additional cedar lining between the layers of cigars. When you taste the cedar aged Upmann Cameroon, you would swear you are smoking its Cuban namesake.

Premium cigars from the Dominican Republic are renowned for their mildness. The combination of fertile soil, superb growing conditions, and select Cuban seed filler tobaccos fermented to perfection makes for superior cigars. Every cigar manufacturer worth his salt knows that the most famous Dominicans like Macanudo and Romeo y Julieta, earned their reputations by following this time-tested formula.

With Cordova, his magnificent new Dominican handmade premium, Augusto Reyes, master grower and cigar maker, also uses these same Cuban seed long fillers, but he goes a step further in the fermentation process, adding an extra year to produce a mildness that is unequaled at twice the price. To this extra mild filler, Reyes adds a Dominican Olor binder and an exquisitely prepared Sumatra wrapper. The effect is scintillating.

Macanudo, the cigar every manufacturer seeks to emulate for quality and consistency, remains on the cutting edge with the introduction of a new Robust. Initially introduced in 1998, the original Macanudo Robust addressed consumer taste preferences at that time. Now with increasing sophistication among smokers whose preferences are for a more full-bodied cigar with increased flavor, Macanudo is kicking up the flavor quotient, making a good cigar an even better, more authoritative one. Crafted by master blender Daniel Nuñez, the new Macanudo Robust is a blend constructed with a dark chocolaty Connecticut Shade wrapper. To this superior leaf, Nuñez adds a sweet Connecticut Broadleaf binder with a cosmopolitan blend of Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan long fillers producing a richer, bolder smoke than in its previous incarnation. For an added touch of distinction, the Macanudo Robust is square pressed; making it one of the handsomest cigars we’ve seen.

This heavenly combination of mild, rich, and oh-so-tasty tobaccos dance on your palate as they arouse the delightful experience usually reserved for the more expensive exclusive cigars. Pros: Easy To Light, Good Draw, Great Flavor, Well Constructed
Cons: A little on the mild side
Best Uses: Events, Everyday, Gifts, Special Occasions
Describe Yourself: Cigar Aficionado

One of the Dominican Republic’s elder statesmen of cigar manufacturers, José Girbés is something of an elitist. Never one to push production, Girbés has maintained a low profile, low production atelier that is below the radar screen when calling attention to big production numbers. He knows big numbers often do not translate into high quality, and he prefers to expend all his efforts on keeping his beloved namesake cigar the best. To that end, you’ll not likely see a José Girbés cigar competing for ratings against the likes of Montecristo or Macanudo. That’s just not Girbés’ style.

Perhaps it’s because he’s content to purchase his tobaccos in minuscule lots so that he can personally examine each bale, keeping tabs on it during its three-year aging. He can personally take a practiced hand in the blending of the exquisite naturally double fermented San Vicente Valley long fillers. He can personally train and oversee his elite cadre of torcedores as they work with prized Brazilian Arapiraca Maduro wrapper leaves. For such reasons as these, José Girbés keeps his production low, very, very low.

But that’s why no one, but no one beats José Girbés for consistency. His value prices speak for themselves. Nowhere will you find a better-made cigar at the price of a José Girbés.

Okie Eagle from Baghdad, Iraq reviewed the MACANUDO CAFE PRINCE OF WALES CONNECTICUT PRESIDENTE

From light to nub this cigar had the most consistent draw and flavor of any smoked yet. Although the flavors are not complex it is very distinctive and satisfying. Starting off with a bit of a nutty flavor the cigar continues to offer notes of citrus and just a bit of spice without being overpowering to the senses. The draw was perfect and there was three inches of ash before I even thought about setting the smoke down. Ending with a bit more of the citrus and spice the cigar had me wanting more.

Why do these cigars taste so good? The answer lies in the sublime collaboration of two men, Avo Uvezian and Henkie Kellner. Avo is composer par excellence; Henkie is a tobacco man’s tobacco man. Avo had the vision of a cigar that would delight the palate with the subtle nuances of a perfectly harmonious blending of flavors. Henkie, an admitted “taste fanatic,” provided the cigar-making know-how. He has a map in his blending room of the region where his tobacco is grown and describes soil chemistry and weather information. He uses this information to optimize the use of each farm’s tobacco, creating the blend giving AVO cigars their unmistakable, creamy smoothness. In cigar-making, as in most pursuits, there’s no substitute for doing your homework and that’s what he and Avo do. Avo and Henkie do make beautiful music together.
