Choose between the medium-to-full bodied Punch Café Royal in glass tubes, the extra aged Punch Royal Coronation with a US Connecticut wrapper, or the short Punch Bolo in a convenient tin. We're not normally allowed to discount a big name national brand like Punch, but the boys at General Cigar Co. gave us a special, one time exception. Soñador is our answer to the larger ring gauge cigars that typically sell for $6, $7, or $8 a stick. Soñador is just as big, just as flavorful, and just as full-bodied as the other “big-boy” brands out there and at a fraction of their stratospheric prices.

Soñador achieves its full-bodied taste by doubling the dose of Corojo used in its manufacture. Not only is Corojo the wrapper, it’s also the binder! And it’s not just any Corojo that we’re talking about. This is top drawer Cuban-seed, sungrown Corojo from Honduras. According to those who note such things, the Honduran Corojo is even better than the Cuban variety. It’s certainly in high demand throughout the industry. And because it’s sungrown, the tobacco retains all the rich, hearty flavor that is synonymous with Corojo. Soñador is also available in Maduro.

Soñador comes in 54, 56, and 62 ring gauge sizes, pushing the size envelope as well as the taste envelope. The double dose of Corojo delivers double the taste while making for a mildness that is rarely found in such large cigars. Try our Soñador; it smokes like a dream. Go with me on this one. Try Soñador, try smoking the cigar your neighbor pays 6 to 8 bucks for. That’s no dream – that’s Soñador.

surfmurf from Bensalem, PA reviewed the VICTOR SINCLAIR SERIES 5/5 BELICOSO CAMEROON

I have always enjoyed a cigar with a Cameroon wrapper but they always seemed so pricey and had and a harsh aftertaste. I tried a 10 pack of these and was pleasantly surprised at everything from construction, lightability, draw and appearance. The flavor was outstanding and at about $2.00 a stick I think I have a new celebration cigar. I still prefer a maduro but this is on helluva cigar with the co$t an added bonus.

John Boy from Defiance, Ohio reviewed the PHOENIX ROBUSTO NATURAL

I've just gotten into cigars, but of the few I've tried, this is one of my favorites so far. Smoke about 3 or 4 cigars a week, and the phoenix is usually 2 of them. Great cigar at a great price.

Bottomline: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Rating:

The closest thing to the Thompson Phoenix available on the open market would easily sell for $100 per box. In fact most people who have participated in our blind taste test compare it favorably to the most respected brands available in the U.S. market. Its taste is reminiscent of highly regarded products of the Dominican Republic selling at prices upwards of $125 per box. This is high praise indeed for a house brand cigar. But high as they are, the reviews don’t really surprise us that much. You see, we know the grower. Having been to his farm, we’ve seen the care he lavishes on his crop, how when it leaves the field it is lovingly bundled for curing and laid softly down to age out the impurities, never rushed in the process. All along, we were confident that this tobacco would someday produce a fine cigar. And when we witnessed the manufacture, we knew we wanted our logo on the band, and we quickly purchased all we could get of his very limited production. Though he’s by no means big, he’s good. Surprisingly good. We think you’ll agree with the tasters who rate it so highly.

Don't Ignore the Exclusives

Wednesday, December 1, 2010 by Trevor Billingsley
If you're the type of person who likes to buy cigars online -- and I'm guessing that you are, or you wouldn't be here -- make sure you check out the link that says "Exclusive Cigar Brands."

These are the smokes you can't find anywhere else online. Obviously this includes all the Thompson brand cigars, but you'd be surprised at what else you can only get here. The massive Fat Boy cigars, for example, are a Thompson exclusive. So are the Big Dog cigars, the mild-medium blend from Victor Sinclair's Jose Dominguez. And so are the Rocky Patel Gold, Rocky Patel Maduro, and Rocky Patel Cameroon cigars.

There are cigars from big-name producers and those who are more unknown, factory seconds and second-to-nones. All are only for sale here, and all have the benefit of being great values thanks to the huge Thompson Cigar discount.

So before you place your regular order, take a minute or five to browse the list of Exclusive Cigar Brands. I guarantee that you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find there.

One Fat Cigar

Saturday, November 27, 2010 by Trevor Billingsley
I like my cigars to have a large ring gauge, but even I have to admit that the Fat Boy cigars sometimes make me feel like I'm back in grade school trying to wrap my six-year-old-mouth around a huge Popsicle.

Fat Boy cigars have a 70-ring gauge, meaning they're more than an inch in diameter. You can't help but smoke these slowly, unless you're an NFL offensive lineman or NBA center, but even if these were half the size they would be worth savoring. Because they are so large, this long filler cigar has two extra leaves than you would find in something smaller, with a corresponding increase in flavor.

My best experience with these was at a co-worker's going-away party a few years ago in Washington D.C.. We wanted to get a group picture, and it was a nice night, so someone got the idea of posing by the monuments. As a result, floating around Facebook somewhere is a picture of me and a dozen or so other guys, puffing away on our massive Fat Boy Natural Gordo cigars. It looks a little ridiculous -- especially since I'm about 5'10" and was one of the bigger people in the group, but it sure was a great smoke.

By your purchases, you’ve made the Maduro cigar one of the industry’s largest selling smokes. Given its smooth mildness and wonderfully rich flavor, it’s small wonder that this cigar enjoys such widespread popularity.

Now with their Legacy cigar, the folks at Victor Sinclair are taking the Maduro smoke to even greater heights. What they’ve succeeded in accomplishing is nothing short of spectacular. It’s not often that you find a cigar with even one of the tobaccos that the Legacy sports. But in this one cigar you find the super long filler blend of Corojo, Criollo, and Piloto Cubano. Add to it the Maduro version of a Connecticut USA Broadleaf binder and wrapper and you have a double Maduro producing a medium to full strength smoke. If you’re a Maduro smoker, you know that these cigars normally sell at $5 or more. This is a deal you want to jump all over right away.

Cigars by the campfire

Sunday, November 14, 2010 by Trevor Billingsley
I like to go camping with my son occasionally, and one backpacker site I check had user post a question that made me laugh out loud. "Will smoking a cigar or pipe keep bears away?"

The answer, sadly, is no. A bear is not going to be scared off by any of your quality cigars. Nor, I hasten to add, will a cigar attract bears. Not even a flavored cigar. Not even if it's infused with honey.

Cigar smoke isn't strong enough to make that kind of an impact. You'd have to be face-to-face with any animal to test this out, and that's a really bad idea when we're talking about things like bears.

I still bring a few cigars in my Xikar Envoy 5 cigar case when we go camping. There's nothing like smoking a cigar by a roaring campfire once the kids are asleep, especially when the alternative is lying sleepless on an air mattress or sleeping bag (which is pretty much how my nights go when we're enjoying that kind of boy's weekend). But just to make it clear, smoking by the campfire should be for enjoyment only, not as some kind of bear repellent.

Cigar Bar: Cabernet & Cigar Pairings

"Great everyday cigar.  Not too short, not too long for a smoke break.  Sweetened cap and delicious, extraordinary tobaccos make a tasty, aromatic treat anytime. Perfect for relaxing on the porch with a glass of Cabernet."

-Rocket
TX.

"Smoke cigars on weekends. Love with a good Cabernet or drink. This cigar is perfect in pre-meal or after supper."

-Brad
Chandler, AZ.

"A Cohiba is a Cohiba. It has a quality that is unmatched in a fine 90-rated cigar. This a cigar I rely on when the day is done, the Cabernet is poured and I am on my back deck thinking about how great retirement from 32 years of teaching can possibly be. I don't share these bad boys, they are mine. Call me selfish, I am a Vietnam Vet, I can take the pain!!"

-SignalMan3
Vallejo, CA.

"Smoke three each Friday and Saturday usually with a good Cabernet, and/or Tequila after supper."

-Brad
Phoenix, AZ.

What cigar do you enjoy with a glass of Cabernet?

This is very good cigar for the money.

One of the old, old Cuban brands before 1950, Gispert was always among the top five most highly rated Cuban brands. Though never widely distributed outside the island nation, still it enjoyed a significant market share among the pantheon of the best of the country’s great smokes. In the chaos of the embargo, however, and in the hands of new owners, Gispert languished, almost to the point of being discontinued altogether.

At long last, and quite overdue for those who remember the brand’s heyday, Altadis has decided to resurrect Gispert to its former glory. Employing the great Cuban-seed tobaccos grown in Honduras and Nicaragua with Ecuadoran Connecticut wrapper, Gispert in its new resurrection today, is a cut above its original blend. For the few surviving old timers who remember fondly the original pre-Castro Gispert, the new incarnation promises to bring back the nostalgia of by-gone days. Why even the retro presentation of the box hearkens back to the olden times. As one considers the return of Gispert to former glory, it’s enough to make one positively misty-eyed.
