No, Roughneck’s no beauty contest winner. In point of fact, it’s coyote ugly. But if every cloud has a silver lining, for Roughneck it’s the taste. It’s a bright, clean, sweet taste that never lets you down. Roughneck is manufactured by hand in the Cheroot size, one that has been around for ages. However, the thing that sets this cigar apart from the rest is the others are machine made. With its Nicaraguan and Honduran short fillers tucked into a Sumatra wrapper, Roughneck is definitely a cut above. The tip is even sweetened slightly to add an extra dimension of taste.

It's Hard to Top the Value of Gispert Cigars

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 by Pat The Cigar Guy
GISPERT LONSDALE CONNECTICUTThere are cigars for just about every price range and situation. The cheapest of cigars aren't necessarily the worst but they probably aren't going to provide as enjoyable experience as more expensive smokes. Higher priced cigars tend to also receive high ratings because more time and care is usually put into the process of making them. In addition, the best of smokes earn their place of distinction because the people who craft them only use certain types of tobacco, leaf that comes from certain varieties of seed, and are often fanatic about quality control.

Brands like Ashton and Davidoff come to mind when aficionados talk about such high-rated, high quality cigars. Nevertheless, there is at least one brand of cigar that makes use of the same types of leaf as those top-shelf smokes yet offers its cigars for a substantially lower price. The company in question is known as "Gispert" and it's hard to find smokes that provide more bang for your buck than their high quality offerings. These excellent cigars use Honduran tobacco for a robust, bold experience and their quality will make you wonder how they can sell them at such lower prices than other brands.

Find these excellent, discount smokes and all of your cigar needs at Thompson Cigars today.

Bragdon from Northern New Jersey reviewed the HOYO DE MONTERREY EXCALIBUR 1066 DARK KNIGHT I CAMEROON TORO

Cool smoking, smooth with consistent taste down to the last 1½. It has a very good flavor with a beautiful, chocolate brown wrapper. Slightly milder and less complex than Rocky Patel's Sun Grown Torpedo, but then it's $2.00 a smoke cheaper. If cigar aesthetes are important, this is an impressive cigar – looks great in your hand. Other cigar smokers will take note – take the band off and let 'em guess! If it's not a 90, it's an 89.

With its Cameroon wrapper and its full-bodied Honduran blend, Excalibur 1066 from the acclaimed maker of Hoyo de Monterrey represents the most successful introduction of a new cigar brand in over twenty years. All of that phenomenal success has to do with the way the Cuban-seed tobaccos are slowly and carefully cured to blend so smoothly with the Cameroon wrapper. Excalibur 1066 is truly an extraordinary smoke, combining the full-bodied taste of its Honduran origin with the rich, spicy finish provided by its Cameroon wrapper. Combining outstanding flavor at an attractive price, Excalibur 1066 is fast becoming a legend in its own right, a fitting tribute to its namesake.

Of course, I’ve seen bundles of cigars. They are sold that way all the time, but I don’t know that I’ve ever seen cigars sold by the pound. After all, tobacco sells by the pound and that’s the approach to marketing these cigars that is being taken by the legendary Nestor Plasencia.

These cigars are called sandwich cigars because they are a combination of long fillers and short fillers, the very same tobaccos that make up the cigars that sell for hundreds of dollars per box; however, you can get these cigars for a fraction of that. This is the same Cuban-seed filler and binder tobacco that is grown on Plasencia’s Nicaraguan and Honduran farms, carefully fermented and aged to the peak of maturity before being used in the premium brands which he specializes in manufacturing.

To this exceptional tobacco, Plasencia now brings a specially imported Indonesian wrapper, perfect for bringing out the flavor subtleties of the fillers and enhancing them with a spicy richness that sets the taste buds aquiver. But price is the real enticement for these cigars.

Macanudo, the cigar every manufacturer seeks to emulate for quality and consistency, remains on the cutting edge with the introduction of a new Robust. Initially introduced in 1998, the original Macanudo Robust addressed consumer taste preferences at that time. Now with increasing sophistication among smokers whose preferences are for a more full-bodied cigar with increased flavor, Macanudo is kicking up the flavor quotient, making a good cigar an even better, more authoritative one. Crafted by master blender Daniel Nuñez, the new Macanudo Robust is a blend constructed with a dark chocolaty Connecticut Shade wrapper. To this superior leaf, Nuñez adds a sweet Connecticut Broadleaf binder with a cosmopolitan blend of Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan long fillers producing a richer, bolder smoke than in its previous incarnation. For an added touch of distinction, the Macanudo Robust is square pressed; making it one of the handsomest cigars we’ve seen.

Soñador is our answer to the larger ring gauge cigars that typically sell for $6, $7, or $8 a stick. Soñador is just as big, just as flavorful, and just as full-bodied as the other “big-boy” brands out there and at a fraction of their stratospheric prices.

Soñador achieves its full-bodied taste by doubling the dose of Corojo used in its manufacture. Not only is Corojo the wrapper, it’s also the binder! And it’s not just any Corojo that we’re talking about. This is top drawer Cuban-seed, sungrown Corojo from Honduras. According to those who note such things, the Honduran Corojo is even better than the Cuban variety. It’s certainly in high demand throughout the industry. And because it’s sungrown, the tobacco retains all the rich, hearty flavor that is synonymous with Corojo. Soñador is also available in Maduro.

Soñador comes in 54, 56, and 62 ring gauge sizes, pushing the size envelope as well as the taste envelope. The double dose of Corojo delivers double the taste while making for a mildness that is rarely found in such large cigars. Try our Soñador; it smokes like a dream. Go with me on this one. Try Soñador, try smoking the cigar your neighbor pays 6 to 8 bucks for. That’s no dream – that’s Soñador.
