H. Upmann is perhaps the most renowned name in cigars, the standard by which cigars have been measured for decades. When a manufacturer with this reputation to uphold enters a new product into his line, he must be sure, very sure. With so much riding on the reputation of the brand, he cannot afford a mediocre effort. Enter H. Upmann Maduro Plus.

Utilizing Connecticut Broadleaf, the rarest selection of Maduro, hard to find, hard to handle without injuring the leaf, but yielding the sweetest, most delicious Maduro smoke imaginable, H. Upmann maintains its stature and sets the world standard for Maduro. Nothing less than the Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro would suffice for H. Upmann. As any cigar maker would attest, however, as good as the wrapper is, there is more to the success of the cigar. If the result is to meet the expectation, the long filler blend must be a taste match and of equally great quality. Suffice it to say, the H. Upmann Maduro Plus preserves the reputation.

For decades since departing Cuba for the Dominican Republic, Upmann has been the cigar that sets the standard for Dominicans.

Now, taking advantage of the availability of a quantity of some outstandingly aged four year old African Cameroon wrapper, Upmann cigars ascend to the next level. The Cameroon provides the perfect complement to Upmann’s inspired blend of Dominican Piloto and Nicaraguan and Peruvian long fillers. The combination is spectacular.

To preserve and protect the taste of the Cameroon wrapper, Altadis spares no expense as they lovingly wrap each cigar in a cedar sheath. Each Upmann, nestled in a protective sleeve of cedar, continues its slow aging process. As a way of enhancing the process even more, Altadis goes the extra mile of inserting an additional cedar lining between the layers of cigars. When you taste the cedar aged Upmann Cameroon, you would swear you are smoking its Cuban namesake.

Close, but no cigar

Tuesday, December 28, 2010 by Trevor Billingsley
I'm sure everyone out there has used the phrase "close but no cigar" at some point. But how many out there know how the expression originated?

Well, as the resident cigar blogger here at Thompson Cigar, that's one of those questions I'm happy to be able to answer.

"Close but no cigar" gets its name from the days when the games at fairs were for adults and cigars were often the prize.  If you knocked down all the weighted milk bottles with the lighter-than-normal ball, you'd win yourself a cigar. If you were like most people and fell short of that mark, well, you were close but you didn't with the prize.

Anyone who can read that and say that we have it way better now than they did back then is sentenced to a day at any county fair with a group of small children who now spend their parents money playing similar games to try and win less valuable stuffed animals that will soon be lying forgotten in a closet. The prizes today stink by comparison. Give me a Padron cigar or an H Upmann any day. Or, really, anything close to those cigars.

Cigars and Port

Thursday, December 23, 2010 by Trevor Billingsley
One of the classic pairings for premium cigars is an after-dinner glass of Port. A quality tawny port is a silky-smooth and sweet red wine that coats the tongue and lingers on the palate, and is meant to be savored rather than gulped, much like a good cigar is a lingering experience rather than a race to the final puff.

This is a pairing I mostly enjoy when I'm out, like when we're at a steakhouse and everyone else wants a bottle. It's a little sweet for me, so I look for a cigar that goes well with that sensation and has some spice to blend with the wine's sweetness.

A Padron 1964 Anniversario is a classic companion, and the one I complement Port with most regularly. You should know by now that I like the Maduro wrappers, so it's not a shock that I'd turn to something with that level of flavor here.

H Upmann cigars and Cohiba cigars are also great options, particularly if I didn't bring any cigars of my own and want to try something different.  The steakhouses I frequent usually has those in stock, and they never disappoint.

Regardless of the cigar, there aren't many better ways of finishing a heavy meal than with the cigar-Port combo. It makes a better dessert than whatever chocolate cake or apple pie they put on the menu as an afterthought.

Don't forget about ashtrays when you look for combos

Sunday, December 12, 2010 by Trevor Billingsley
Cigar ashtrays may be the most underrated of the cigar accessories. They aren't as cool or portable as cigar cutters or cigar lighters, and they won't keep your cigars fresh like humidors will. But somehow, I always find myself searching in vain for these when I have guests over.Cigar plus Ashtray Combo

I think that's because when I first started smoking cigars, I didn't think much about ashtrays. Generally, I used a plastic cup half-filled with stale beer to do the trick at the end of the night, because that's just the kind of classy guy I was. And don't snicker -- I'm betting you've done that yourself once upon a time.

Then I reached an age where I realized that just looked silly. You get out of college and grad school, you start having to wear ties at work, and the plastic cup starts to look ridiculous. And then you start playing catch-up to try and get enough cigar ashtrays to not look unsophisticated when company comes over, and odds are that you just start picking up random ones that don't do the job well or break too easily.

One quick way of making up the gap: One of the cigars plus ashtray combos for sale at Thompson Cigar.  There are a lot of options, but if your cigar preferences are like mine you can't go wrong with the H Upmann Magnum with Ashtray combo. It's five excellent cigars plus a stylish ashtray, so you get both the smokes and something practical for you and your guests to put them out in. Because really, aren't we all too old to go back to that plastic cup thing?

The Dynamic Dozen

Saturday, December 11, 2010 by Trevor Billingsley
If you've been following this blog for any length of time, you've probably noticed that I'm a sucker for good cigar samplers. I love getting a few examples of a variety of premium cigars, rather than investing in a single box from a single manufacturer. It gives me more options to choose from in my humidor, and there's nothing I like more than a well-stocked variety of smokes.

Here's one that I somehow missed until I saw it in the "Hot Buys" section -- the 12 Cigar Selection Sampler. It's one of those things that seems like it was made for me, with some of the best Dominican cigars available in three legendary brand names.

Each of these boxes comes with four H Upmann cigars, four Montecristo cigars, and four Romeo y Julieta cigars. All three were originally made famous in Cuba (and still compete there with different cigars sold under the same name in Havana), but since having left the island have maintained their fierce reputation for superior cigars.

When I got my first one of these, they didn't last very long in the cigar humidor. Both individually and collectively, these are hard cigars to resist.
