The La Moneda has filler tobacco from the famed '97 crop – it doesn't get any better. Then the Dominican manufacturer, has aged this most select filler an extra six months longer than usual before it is used to make one of the smoothest hand rolled cigars we've come across in a long time. Add a sale price that is truly a sale, and you have an irresistible deal. Unfortunately, the supply is limited, so we urge you to act quickly to get your supply before they're all gone. It's been a long time since you've seen this good a cigar at such an affordable price. It's real value for your money. Of course, part of the reason we're able to bring this good a cigar to you at less than 75 cents apiece is because you buy them in bundles. When there's no fancy cedar box to pay for and no high advertising costs associated with the product, the cost of the cigar is more affordable. And these are quality cigars, ones worthy of your humidor, ones you can make your everyday smoke. These are cigars from facilities we choose with care, and because we buy them in bulk, you save. Limit 2 bundles per customer.

The face behind the success of Muriel Coronella cigars

Friday, February 18, 2011 by Trevor Billingsley
I always like to know who my cigars are named after, so when I first saw Muriel Coronella cigars for sale I did some quick google searching to see who "Muriel Coronella" was. (This was years ago -- don't judge!)Muriel Coronella cigars

Of course, that was dumb. There is no "Muriel Coronella," regardless of how much the company tries to trick you by putting a picture of a woman in historical-looking garb on the box. But that's OK, because that bit of research got me some historical trivia about the brand that some of you probably already knew about.

There was a woman behind the Muriel Coronella cigars sales pitch years ago, but her name wasn't Muriel. Instead, Edie Adams became the face of Muriel cigars in the 1960s. The singer and comedienne sang some classic bits advertising the products, famously parodying the hit showtune single from "Sweet Charity by crooning "Hey big spender, spend a little dime with me." Adams was one of the sirens of her day, and a sultry request from her would be enough to make even the most dedicated fan of a particular brand consider switching if it would please her.

Moreover, Adams was more than a spokesmodel -- she even patented a cigar holder-ring, designed to make women look more "ladylike" when taking a puff.

Incidentally, she was married during that period to Ernie Kovacs, a comedian who endorsed Dutch Masters cigars instead. There's no word on how the two reconciled their cigar differences, but I've seen pictures of both Adams and Kovacs and I'm pretty sure I know who would have made the most convincing case to me.

School for Scoundrels

Friday, February 11, 2011 by Trevor Billingsley
If you're having an office social gathering or a professional networking event and want to provide something that will both provide an excellent smoke and a chortle, take a look at these Scoundrels cigars.Scoundrels cgars

Scoundrels cigars are old-school in a lot of ways. They are made in the classic Cheroot style, which hearkens back to the early days of cigar making. Each is hand-made from mild Dominican tobacco, and capped off with a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper. The result is a creamy and mild smoke that anyone can appreciate it.

But the other thing to note, especially if you have a sense of humor, is the label. The bundle of Scoundrels cigars features a classic cartoon tycoon, hair slicked back, smoking a cigar with a huge "I'm-rolling-in-dough" expression on his face. It's perfect for the person, or the social occasion, that enjoys cigars and can spare an ironic chuckle as they smoke.

The Scoundrels cigars also may be the best deal we have now at Thompson Cigar -- and as you may have guessed if you've checked out the site for more than a minute, you know that's saying a lot. A bundle of 75 is on sale right now for $49, so each cigar basically costs the coins you get as change when you buy your morning coffee. For those prices, these are a great deal even for use as a holiday party centerpiece -- just make sure to snag them for the humidor afterwords if nobody breaks open the package!

Introducing the Empress of Dominican Republic

Tuesday, February 8, 2011 by Trevor Billingsley
I just got my first batch of Empress of Dominican Republic cigars, and there's a 100% chance I will be ordering more. There are a lot of reasons, starting with the fact that it's a hand-rolled Dominican cigars with a Habano wrapper that right now is on sale for $39.95 for a bundle of 16, but there is one more superficial reason.Empress of Dominican Republic

The ash is awesome.

Call me superficial, but I love cigars where the ash hangs there until even casual passers-by are wondering how it is defying gravity. If you're the same way, this is your kind of cigar.

On a windy day a couple of nights ago, the ash still held to the end of these babies as though there were hidden magnets involved (which, as near as I can taste, there are not). I can only imagine what it is like when the weather is calm and I don't accidentally knock it off with a sudden gesture. It's a smooth smoke and enjoyable on its merits to be sure, but that's not why I can feel people staring at me when I smoke it. I know everyone wants to make sure not to miss the sight when the ash finally falls.

Given another bundle of these, I'm going to set myself a challenge: Can I make it through a whole cigar without losing any of the ash. Most experts, and all physicists, would say that's impossible. But based on my experienced with the Empress of Dominican Republic cigars so far, I'm not so sure, and at any rate I'll have a lot of fun trying.

The one reason you smoke cigars?

Friday, January 28, 2011 by Trevor Billingsley
The last time I was at our local cigar lounge, one of the topics of conversation was the question: "What's the one biggest reason why you smoke cigars?" Deep, perhaps, but much safer than talking politics.

I was torn between two answers. On a practical level, I smoke cigars because my grandfather smoked cigars. Nobody else in the family was quite as dedicated to cigars as he was -- I'm sure that the sales of Garcia Vega cigars went down considerably the year after he passed away -- and without him as the exemplar I doubt I would have gotten into it as early as I did.

But in my life now, I smoke cigars because in a world that is often stressed and chaotic, it's he one habit I have that forces me to relax. And to some extent, I have the anti-smoking regulations to thank for that.

Because I can't smoke at my desk at work, I usually have a cigar and a drink when I get home, after dinner once the kids are in bed. That has become my time, my ritual that allows me to decompress. It forces me to step away from my computer and step outside, and gives my mind freedom to wander. Perhaps as a result, I do some of my best thinking out there, whether it's a new way of looking at a work challenge or figuring out what Maryland should do on defense this basketball season. That 45 or 60 minutes is a sanity-saver, and I get it because I smoke cigars.

Others in the group talked about how they associated cigars with friendships or fun times, or that it was a guilty pleasure that helped brighten the day. How would you answer that question?

Luxury gifts that won't break the bank

Thursday, January 27, 2011 by Trevor Billingsley
If you're looking for gift ideas -- and this time of year, you probably are -- you should click on the "Luxury Cigar Gifts" link even if you're on a budget.Padron No. 88 Sampler

At Thompson Cigar, "luxury" isn't a fancy way of saying "really expensive." In fact, plenty of the items highlighted there are less than $50. Instead, these are "luxury" items in the classic sense of the word, which carries the definition: "a pleasure out of the ordinary allowed to oneself."

Take the
Padrón No. 88 Sampler, for example. It comes with five great Padrón cigars -- a Padrón 2000, Padrón 3000, Padrón 4000, Padrón 5000, and Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Exclusivo. Each of these is an outstanding smoke that will brighten anyone's day ... and the whole package costs just $37.

There's also the Classic Cherry Combo, one of the most popular gift items that Thompson Cigar sells. The package includes a great humidor, an individual cigar tube, and 25 imported handmade cigars. That little package of luxury will cost you a little more ... $45.

One of the great things about cigars is that they are affordable luxury. A premium cigar experience doesn't have to break the budget, and the
Luxury Cigar Gifts for sale here are great illustrations of that fact.

Reviving La Aroma de Cuba cigars

Tuesday, January 11, 2011 by Trevor Billingsley
A century ago, La Aroma de Cuba cigars were among the most highly sought-after in the world.  Back in the day, it was Winston Churchill's cigar of choice, and you know that guy knew a thing or two about quality cigars. Then it faded into the annals of history.

Until now.

Thanks to the distribution system of Ashton cigars and the skilled craftsmanship of Don Pepin Garcia, La Aroma de Cuba cigars has been revived as a boutique stick that's just about the best thing coming out of Nicaragua. Their cigars have hit the market by storm, earning high ratings and frequent use at the highest rankings of society.

Thompson Cigar has recently added two La Aroma de Cuba cigars for sale. The La Aroma de Cuba Edicion Especial Natural Toro cigar is a medium-bodied cigar with an old-school flair that has a little kick to it at the finish. The La Aroma de Cuba New Blend cigars are rich and spicy, just a touch more mild with a sweeter finish thanks to the Connecticut broadleaf wrapper.

Any time you revive a brand like La Aroma de Cuba cigars, there's a risk. If it fails, it cheapens a historic name and makes the manufacturer look bad, but succeeding is hard given both the high standard and the rose-colored glasses look back with nostalgia that makes older cigars get better and better in our memories year. But no worries: Don Pepin Garcia hit the mark here.

The Bargain of the Black

Sunday, January 2, 2011 by Trevor Billingsley
As the money goes flowing out the door this holiday season, it's hard to see very many things as great values. No matter how much the department stores tell you how much you're saving with each purchase, all I know is that my wife's Visa bill is still really high as she picks up the brand-name merchandise that costs a premium price even when it's on sale.

So it's times like these that I really appreciate the Thompson Black Label cigars.

There's nothing fancy about these cigars. They come in a bundle, not in a fancy box. There's nothing earth-shattering about the label -- it's the Thompson Logo on a black background with a red border. You won't see advertisements for it in glossy magazines. There aren't any of those premium bells and whistles that can add to a brand's prestige ... and its cost.

Here's what the Thompson Black Label cigars do have: Quality tobacco (both long and cut fillers) and hand-rolled construction that make this a very good everyday cigar. And at around $15 for a bundle of 25, it's a bargain at 64 cents a cigar, which shows you how great a deal you can get on cigars when you're just paying for the ingredients and not the marketing and advertising.

One note: There's a limit of two Thompson Black Label cigars bundles per customer. So if you want to make sure you have enough sticks on hand for the holidays and don't want to spend a ton of money to provide for an open house full of neighbors you hardly know, you can get that done with a pair of these for just above $30. That's what I call spending money to save money.

A cigar holder ... and more

Friday, December 31, 2010 by Trevor Billingsley
If you want to impress at the next gathering where you're likely to smoke a single cigar, there's nothing better to whip out than the Rocky Patel Charmian Carbon Fiber Tube.

On the surface, this is just a cigar holder. OK, it's a very snazzy cigar holder, silver and black, looking almost like a piece of oversized jewelry. But it's more than just a place to put your smoke (up to Churchill size). It has everything at the ready for you to enjoy your cigar.

The extendable tube has a lighter attachment, a triple torch that makes sure you're never reduced to having to borrow someone else's lighter or ask for a match. In addition, the Punch Cutter at the bottom means that your cigar is just a twist of the wrist away from being ready to smoke.

There are plenty of great cigar accessories for sale here, but what I like about this is that it's a quick and portable resource for me when I'm on my way out the door and want to make sure I have a cigar and the requisite gear at the ready, but don't want to overload my pockets. As long as I make sure there's always a cigar in there, I know that it will take just a few seconds to ensure that everything I'll need to smoke my cigar is right there for me when the occasion arises.
