Some Cigar Terms to Know

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 by Pat The Cigar Guy
COHIBA PLUS CASE CAMEROON LONSDALE GRANDEThe rich history and refined nature of cigars has spawned its own subculture and terminology. Although seasoned aficionados are probably familiar with most of these terms, they might be a source of confusion to new cigar smokers. There are too many terms for just one blog post so I will outline some of the more commonly used, cigar-related words and phrases here:
  • Blend: This refers to different types of tobacco used as filler.
  • Cigarillo: The term used for small, thin cigars that are often machine-made rather than being rolled by hand.
  • Draw: The word aficionados use instead of "inhale" because it more accurately describes the act of sucking air through a cigar to taste the smoke in the mouth as opposed to inhaling it into the lungs.
  • Filler: The tobacco inside the cigar.
  • Humidor: A device for storing cigars and one of the first things you should get after becoming an aficionado. It is known as a "humidor" because it maintains the humidity and temperature at levels ideal for preserving and aging your treasured cigars.
  • Maduro: A very dark, fermented wrapper that can have a lot of flavor. "Maduro" means "ripe" in Spanish.
  • Wrapper: The tobacco leaf used to wrap the filler tobacco.

The Quick and Easy Way to Maintain Moisture Levels in Your Humidor

Saturday, January 21, 2012 by Pat The Cigar Guy
Proper maintenance of your humidor is critical for storing your cigars. The smokes that you TC CRYSTAL HUMIDIFIER 50 & SOLUTIONtreasure need to be kept at just the right levels of moisture and temperature. Lower the temperature and they might dry out. Raise the temperature too much and tobacco beetles can hatch and eat their way through your precious collection in a matter of days. The right amount of moisture is especially important because it determines how well your cigars age. Too little humidity and the tobacco leaves can dry out and crack. Too much and you cigars can become sopping wet. Neither extreme is preferred so you have to take steps to keep the moisture in your cigar storage system at around 70%.

Maintaining the correct degree of humidity when storing cigars has come a long way from just putting a small bowl of water in a cedar box and periodically checking the cigars to see if they feel "right". One of the quickest and easiest ways to maintain that magic 70% humidity mark doesn't actually use plain, liquid H2O. The crystal humidifier solution from Thompson Cigars is a gel that maintains moisture at 70%. All you need to do is pour it into the humidifier, wait a few hours, and then put it into your cigar storage system. It will automatically humidify the air to 70% as long as you keep putting the gel into your humidifier.

Which Cigars to Bring on a Trip?

Monday, January 16, 2012 by Pat The Cigar Guy
If you need to do any amount of traveling, cigars should be one of the main items on your NUB BY OLIVA HABANO 460 HABANO ROTHSCHILDchecklist of things to pack. Don't expect to be able to find the cigars you like no matter where you are headed because they might not be available or smoke shops might be hard to find. If you do come across a good tobacco shop, it might also be a lot more expensive than the place where you usually buy your cigars. This will certainly be the case if you make all of your cigar-related purchases from a trusted online cigar store. It's much easier just to pack and bring all of the cigars you need for the trip.

It's easy to just recommend bringing your favorite brands of cigars when traveling but why not try something new for a change? Here are a couple of suggestions for cigars to bring with you when taking a trip:
  • ACID Cigars: If you haven't tried one of these quality, flavored smokes, a trip to a new destination is one of the best excuses for seeing why so many aficionados love this brand.
  • A cigar sampler: Buy an interesting sampler before the trip and try a different smoke each night of your travels.
  • A five pack: Get a five pack of a brand you have yet to try and use your trip as en excuse for trying them.

Digital Humidifiers Provide a Precision Humidor Solution

Monday, January 16, 2012 by Pat The Cigar Guy
CASA MAGNA NO. 4 OSCURO CORONACigar storage can be a tricky business. It's usually easy as enjoying a Casa Magna but various factors can present serious challenges to any humidor. If you reside where the weather is cold and dry, you might end up fighting to keep that air moisture reading at 70%. If you happen to live in an area that is warm and humid all of the time, maintaining humidity in your cigar storage area won't be the problem. Instead, you will be doing your best to keep your precious smokes from soaking up water from the air. However, even if you don't live in a place that experiences either extreme, maintaining the right amount of moisture can still be problematic.

To maintain the correct amount of humidity for storing cigars, you have to first and foremost have a precise reading of the moisture within your cigar storage device. You will get the most accurate measurements from digital humidifiers and this is why those devices are a must for every aficionado. Use a digital humidifier in your cigar storage area and you will know what the moisture content is at a glance. Set the device to 70% and it should do a good job at keeping your cigars at 70% humidity no matter where you live.

Is it Time to Upgrade Your Humidor?

Monday, January 16, 2012 by Pat The Cigar Guy
VENETIAN CHERRY 125 COUNT HUMIDORUpgrades aren't just limited to computers. Although the pace at which technology moves forward has made "upgrading" nearly synonymous with computers, many aspects of life are also in need of improvement on a regular basis. You upgrade your home every time you remodel, add on a room, or fix the roof. You upgrade your car whenever you trade it in for a newer model. One can even argue that you upgrade yourself when you go to the doctor for some needed treatment. Of course, there is also always plenty to upgrade when it comes to cigars.

Adding more high-rated cigars to your collection is an upgrade of sorts. Replacing an old, faulty lighter with a steady flame Rocky Patel lighter is an excellent upgrade to your smoking experience. While these are a couple of upgrades that you don't necessarily require, there is at least one type of upgrade that can't be avoided. This is the acquisition of a bigger humidor. Once you have too many cigars for your old storage device, you have a couple of options: either give away half of your cigars or get a large humidor. Unless you are extremely generous, it's best to buy a quality cigar storage device that can safely store and preserve your quality smokes.

Cigarillos Are the Solution for a Quick Smoke

Monday, January 16, 2012 by Pat The Cigar Guy
Smoking cigars is an endeavor that is best done on its own time. Some tightly rolled cigars PHILLIES TITAN NATURAL LONSDALEtake longer to smoke than others and most cigars are going to last for at least 40 minutes. Of course it all depends on how fast you smoke them but racing to finish a cigar is a sad fate for any hand-rolled smoke. It defeats the purpose of sitting back and enjoying the cigar in the first place so you are just better off waiting for a time to properly and thoroughly enjoy a quality smoke.

Nevertheless, some aficionados can barely find the time to enjoy cigars in this manner. Work, travel, and other duties make it difficult to even find just one extra hour a month that can be dedicated to smoking cigars. Such cigar loving jet-setters have to make do with the time they have but they shouldn't need to give up cigar smoking. There is an easy solution to such time constraints and it's called the "cigarillo". These are basically miniature cigars that are suitable for a quick smoke. Like other cigars, they should be stored in a humidor but you don't need a good, solid hour to smoke them. Their size means that you can enjoy them for half the time or less without feeling like you need to smoke them as fast as possible.

The Modern Humidor is Found Online

Saturday, December 17, 2011 by Pat The Cigar Guy
CASA MAGNA BELICOSO OSCUROBefore the advent of the Internet, cigar aficionados obtained smokes from their local tobacco or cigar store. These outlets were a common fixture of American towns and cities for several decades. As convenience stores gradually replaced five and dimes, small tobacco retailers also declined in numbers. Convenience stores and gas stations also sold cigarettes and other tobacco-related products, and many of the traditional smoke shops just couldn't compete.

The exception were tobacco shops that sold a good selection of cigars and had a healthy following of loyal clientele. In dealing with cigars, these places also had their own humidors. Although not as common as they used to be, shops that specifically deal in tobacco products and fine cigars can still be found. They still carefully store precious and timeless smokes in their own humidors but the modern humidor is arguably the online one.

The many benefits of buying cigars online makes this the easiest and most convenient way to acquire smokes. While using the Internet to shop for cigars doesn't replace the welcome, heady scents and friendly conversations of an old fashioned smoke shop, the selection is typically better, the prices lower, and the information about each smoke is at the tips of your fingers. You also don't even need to leave the house to search for and buy quality smokes such as the Casa Magna Belicoso Oscuro.

Go online to shop for cigars in the modern humidor.

Save Money with Cigar Samplers

Thursday, December 15, 2011 by Pat The Cigar Guy
There are a number of benefits that come from buying cigar samplers. The assortment of different smokes, brands, and flavors lets you try several cigars that you probably wouldn't 90 PLUS RATED DELUXE SAMPLERhave bought otherwise. Cigars are an investment in terms of cost and your valuable smoke time. This makes many an aficionado especially wary of purchasing a box of unfamiliar cigars of the same brand because if you don't enjoy them then you are more or less stuck with that box of cigars until you can give them away to an aficionado who does happen to like them.

Better to buy a cigar sampler that includes several unfamiliar brands than separately purchasing boxes of each brand. Although you would be making large additions to your personal humidor (and that's always a good thing), you would probably also be spending large amounts of money on at least a few cigars that you don't really like. There's no good reason for doing that so get more out of your investment by purchasing cigar samplers of those unfamiliar brands. Samplers are also a fantastic way to try out some of the best cigars available without having to spend too much. The 90 Plus Rated Deluxe is one such sampler.

Save money and time by purchasing cigar samplers from your favorite online cigar store.
