Are Cellophane Wrappers Bad for Cigars?

Sunday, January 29, 2012 by Pat The Cigar Guy
In the not too distant past, hand-wrapped cigars were delivered in their boxes or in bundles ARTURO FUENTE HEMINGWAY BEST SELLER MADURO PERFECTOand that was about it for packaging. Decorative and sturdy cigar boxes kept them safe enough during travel so there wasn't much need to package them in a different manner. After buying a box of cigars, aficionados transferred them to their humidors and aged them until smoking. However, someone eventually did improve upon the cigar-packaging process. It wasn't a huge deal but many cigar companies saw it as a way of providing an extra bit of protection for their product. This innovation was the cellophane wrapper and it has become a common aspect of many cigar brands.

The cellophane wrapper protects the cigar during handling by distributors and in cigar shops. It's really a nice way of ensuring that you and you alone touch the cigar once it has left the factory. Although the wrapper itself won't hurt the cigar, it's not meant to be used during storage or any aging process. Take the wrapper off before storing it to make sure that it receives the proper amount of moisture. Otherwise, the wrapper will keep your smoke a little too safe and secure and it will probably dry out.

Toro Toro is this month’s hands-down winner in the value for price competition. Not a closeout price, not a job lot cigar, Toro Toro is the genuine article, a respectable example of fine Dominican cigar workmanship utilizing quality aged tobaccos blended to serve as your everyday cigar. No, Toro Toro has no pretension of competing with the greats, but the manufacturer knows there is an ample market for the second-tier cigar, the one that smokers can comfortably, affordably turn to for daily pleasure.

It’s quite unusual to find an economy cigar sporting native Dominican Republic tobacco, the long fillers hail from Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and the binder is Dominican Olor. However, it’s the wrapper that is perhaps the most surprising feature of Toro Toro; it’s a three year old Ecuador-grown Connecticut. That accounts for the cigar’s mildness while producing flavor nuances that are virtually unheard of in such a low priced smoke. Then there is Toro Toro Maduro. Like its Natural brother, it is blended to enhance the double fermented San Andres wrapper. Toro Toro comes in four popular sizes, and we’re offering an even lower price on multiple bundle purchases.

Of course, I’ve seen bundles of cigars. They are sold that way all the time, but I don’t know that I’ve ever seen cigars sold by the pound. After all, tobacco sells by the pound and that’s the approach to marketing these cigars that is being taken by the legendary Nestor Plasencia.

These cigars are called sandwich cigars because they are a combination of long fillers and short fillers, the very same tobaccos that make up the cigars that sell for hundreds of dollars per box; however, you can get these cigars for a fraction of that. This is the same Cuban-seed filler and binder tobacco that is grown on Plasencia’s Nicaraguan and Honduran farms, carefully fermented and aged to the peak of maturity before being used in the premium brands which he specializes in manufacturing.

To this exceptional tobacco, Plasencia now brings a specially imported Indonesian wrapper, perfect for bringing out the flavor subtleties of the fillers and enhancing them with a spicy richness that sets the taste buds aquiver. But price is the real enticement for these cigars.

Smooth and relaxing full flavor!

Jake from New Hope, PA reviewed the SMOKIN 66 14 WHEELER NATURAL TORO

Surprisingly satisfying cigar with great draw that builds an impressive ash. Very mild..but not to the point of blandness. Generally like big ring cigars (La Gloria Cubana Serie R #6 and 7, Banker and CAO Black) and found this one in the same ball park, though on the milder side. Suggest a slice cut vs bullet hole due to ring size. Good value for the buck.
