The Alec Bradley Trilogy Authentic Corojo is a high quality cigar at a very affordable price. I've read that Trilogy cigars are triangular shaped and there are varying degrees of that shape. The gars I recieved were more parejo than angular which was ok because they smoked great and had wonderful flavor with hints of nutty and woody. They weren't at all peppery tasting like many cigars made with Nicaraguan leaf. I highly recommend adding a box of these to your humidor.Happy Smokin', GARMAN

When most folks hear the name "Nero," the initial thought is of the emperor who fiddled while Rome burned. That story may be apocryphal, but if it isn't, it would be understandable if the fire was set accidentally from a misplaced medieval cigar lighter used to activate a Nero Extra Churchill Maduro cigar.

OK, that's a stretch, considering these quality cigars are brought to you by Nestor Plasencia, who wasn't exactly born in the Roman era. But these sticks, made exclusively for Thompson Cigar, are good enough that it would be easy to miss buildings burning around you as the result of being too focused on the cigar.

Plasencia is one of the leaders of the Central American cigar industry, and his facilities produce cigars for the likes of Alec Bradley, Rocky Patel and Gurkha. That care and quality is evident here, as the blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan tobacco is accentuated by a Costa Rican Maduro wrapper.

Two things in particular stand out for me here. The first is that it's one of the darkest smokes available, a big plus for someone like me who loves the Maduro. And the second is that the construction and tobacco blend produce a cool-looking silvery ash that seems to hang on the end of the cigar like something out of the movies. It's hard not to feel cool smoking one of these, and the taste makes it one of the most enjoyable options around. Even if you're not actually the Emperor of Rome.

Alec Bradley cigars have shown that it doesn't matter if you come late to the game, as long as you come strong.

The company entered the cigar business in 1996 as a boutique shop, but didn't really make a splash right away. Instead, it bided its time until company chairman Alan Rubin discovered some tobacco he liked growing in Honduras in 2002. He waited for that to grow and mature ... and since then, Alec Bradley cigars have succeeded like a red-hot three-point shooter in an empty basketball gym. They just can't miss.

The best way to experience the quality and depth of Alec Bradley cigars is through a sampler. The Alec Bradley 90 Rated Cigar Sampler offers five different cigars, each of which is rated 90 or higher, which you probably guessed from the name. At a cost of around $30, that's less than six dollars apiece. Or there's the Alec Bradley Super 15 Sampler which gives you 15 premium cigars for a little over $60.

I did not come up with the idea for a Smoketoberfest Sampler, though it is the kind of eye-rolling pun that I usually revel in creating.

But I did see right away why this particular mix of cigars was a great idea.

It's short, sweet, and to the point. You get five total cigars, from Gurkha, Alec Bradley and Gran Habano. They're all sure things from the best in the business, and if you haven't tried anything from these guys yet -- well, what are you waiting for anyway? Something like this Smoketoberfest Sampler?

I also like the idea because it's a nice day or weekend of cigars for many frequent smokers. Five for me in a day is a lot -- I very rarely get that kind of free time, thanks to the job, wife, and kids -- but it's definitely a day of overindulgence when it happens.

In other words, it's exactly what Oktoberfest is like for many casual beer drinkers who use the occasion as an excuse to go a little crazy. Some dress up in weird costumes -- not something I recommend -- and go on bar crawls. Others hang out in makeshift beer gardens and down some pitchers. Or you can be more refined and drink some quality bottles on the deck. Either way, it's a fun excuse for drinking more than usual.

Oktoberfest may be in the rear-view mirror, but ... you know that's a lot of marketing, right? It doesn't have to be October to enjoy an extended day of beer-drinking (any NFL Sunday does nicely). And any day can be a Smoketoberfest with these five cigars as the inspiration.

Many consider the Habano wrapper the closest thing to the experience of a genuine Cuban cigar, and their proponents often refuse to consider anything else as being worthy of their palate. Of course, there are two sides to this debate. There are other folks (Maduro fans seem to be particularly loud) who insist that the Habano wrapper is more sizzle than substance and that others offer a better smoking experience.

There's just one way around this, and that's to decide for yourself. As any poker player knows, when you can get a hand with four kings you have to go all-in. The cards don't get much better than that, so you have to take advantage when they fall your way.
